THE SURVEY

THE SURVEY
BLUE DEAL is an Interreg-MED project that promotes and fosters the development of Blue Energy (BE) within the planning and management of maritime spaces in the Mediterranean basin. The project partners cooperate to overcome current technical and administrative restrictions for BE deployment and define proper procedures that respect regulatory constraints and ensure environmental and social sustainability.
BLUE DEAL aims to increase transnational activity of innovative clusters and networks of the Blue Energy sector, develop links and synergies between SMEs, public authorities, institutions, and civil society, establishing transnational and regional BLUE DEAL Alliances.

In the framework of BLUE DEAL project, a survey on the perception and attitude towards BE and technologies to harness it was developed and targeted to the general public. The survey aimed to analyse the opinion of the population of the coastal area on their perception of BE, their knowledge on new renewable energy sources and the new technologies for their deployment. The active participation of citizens in energy systems and the energy transition is a crucial element for a proper BE planning. For this reason, the investigation on the Blue Energy’s social acceptance was carried out.
The survey was conducted initially in 9 regions of the Mediterranean basin through a questionnaire and more than 2000 interviews, prepared by the University of Siena. The questionnaire is common for all Project partners to ensure a high degree of comparability in the results. Interviews took place between the end of the summer and the beginning of autumn 2020 (Cyprus: spring 2021), and the 9 sites involved were: Čiovo – Dalmatia (Croatia), Hersonissos - Crete (Greece), Durres (Albania), Kalkara and Xghajra (Malta), Larnaca (Cyprus), Salobreña - Andalucia (Spain), Pobla de Farnals - Comunidad Valenciana (Spain), Isola del Giglio – Tuscany (Italy) and Civitavecchia - Latium (Italy).
The survey results helped and guided the development of other project activities, including communication to the general public.
This study provided insight on how BE technologies are perceived by the population in involved countries/regions, and to what extent local communities are inclined to accept a possible installation of BE in their premises.
The survey has the potential to become a model for its replication in other countries to have a more understanding on the Blue Energy perception of the population of the Mediterranean area. Based on this, we have implemented the survey in 3 additional locations in the Mediterranean basin through X interviews. The second part of Interviews took place between the spring season 2022, and the 3 sites involved were: Livorno (Italy), Dubrovnik (Croatia), Koper (Slovenia)
